Departure from Chacabuco’s pier to continue with a scenic drive over one of the most beautiful
areas of the impressive Carretera Austral (southern road) started in 1976 from an initiative of the then president of Chile. The portion which the passengers will visit is the main section of the
road, Coyhaique Section, opened for public use in 1983. It is the most densely populated area of
the region, with Coyhaique as capital city and Puerto Chacabuco as its seaport.
The road runs close to the steppe, to the east of the Andes, through lands cleared by settlers
long ago. During the drive, visitors will be able to admire the natural and wild beauty of River
Simpson Natural Reserve, lying across the river, squeezed by steep cliffs graced by numerous
waterfalls such as the vaporous Velo de la Novia (Bride’s Veil) and the Virgin Waterfalls.
Finally, we will stop approx. 45 min in Coyhaique for visiting the main square “Plaza de Armas”,
the handicraft center and if you want drinking a coffee in the bar situated on the corner of this
square.
Then, we will coming back to Chacabuco by a stop at the Mirador to admire “la Piedra del Indio”
(the Indian Rock), a rock in shape of an Indian profile.
